Born and raised in Morgantown, West Virginia, Terry Lee dreamed of becoming a famous artist and studying in Paris. She moved to Washington DC right after graduation and enrolled in Corcoran School of Art. After only 6 months there she married and became the mother of her first son. Within the next 7 years, Terry Lee had 3 more sons and moved from DC to St. Paul, MN to Sacramento, CA. During these years of raising her now large family, she worked mostly full time and didn't find much time for her art. In 1975 she enrolled at the Sierra Madre School of Art in San Dimas, CA. "During those 4 years my hopes and dreams surfaced again and while taking classes and painting well into the nights, I really felt my art was flourishing" Life has a way of throwing curve balls and again forced her to forgo her dreams. It wasn't until 1985 that she again picked up the brush and started painting again.
In 1985, her new husband, Charles Lash, encouraged her to paint (he really did not believe she could paint). She took out her old Grumbacher paint set and had a painting completed when he came home from grocery shopping. The rest is history, he often took her paintings off the easel to show to his friends. While working for the Financial Aid Office at West Virginia University, she painted on weekends and took her newly created paintings to work on Mondays and often sold them right then and there.
Chuck is definitely the Artist's proverbial "artist's spouse". He does all of Terry's framing and often makes most of her frame's. He is also her major critic. Without his support and assistance, Terry doubts she could show on the level she does now. "I feel very strongly that an artist must have the love and support of the people around me to be able to create and sometimes be up all night painting and have to sleep during the day. Creative people are crazy and I thank Chuck, my sons Bill, Grant and John Townsend and my
family and friends for believing in me and putting up with me".
A special debt of gratitude is owed to the owners of my paintings who have purchased my paintings these many years. Their encouragement and support is most gratifying. Thank you all so much and I hope you enjoy my new web site. If you have any questions or comments please contact me thru the "contact the artist" feature of this web site.
